Till settings: every option on the till, and where to find it

Till options live in two places. Each device has its own choices in the till's … menu: what a tap does, prices and stock on tiles, layout, where the cart sits, picture size, how each sale starts and sounds. Business-wide rules sit in Settings under VAT and the till. Add-ons such as Quick Sale, rental and tips add more.

Two hands adjusting the angle of a tablet on a swivel stand at a shop counter, a receipt printer and a barcode scanner beside it, the screen softly out of focus.

Where are the till's settings?

In two places, and the split is deliberate. Options that suit one counter but not another are saved on the device itself, in the till's … menu. Rules that must be the same everywhere, such as how VAT is read, are set once for the business in Settings, under Invoices and tax, in the section called VAT and the till.

A third group is add-ons. They are switched on for your business and add buttons or screens to the till, such as Quick Sale or rental. If one is not on, its button simply does not appear.

What is in the till's … menu?

Tap the round … button (More till options) at the top right of the main till. Everything here applies to the device you are holding, so a customer-facing tablet and a back-counter computer can be set up quite differently.

Bigger pictures and Per row only show while the layout is Tiles. Picking a picture size sets Per row back to Auto, which fits as many tiles as the space allows.

The layout choice lasts for the visit; the rest are remembered until someone changes them.

What do the tile options change?

Show prices and Show stock on every tile decide what each tile carries. Turn prices off on a screen customers can see when you agree prices case by case; the big product photo then hides the price too. Turn stock on for a back counter where staff need the count before they promise anything.

When you tap a product is shared by every till on this device, from the main till to Quick Sale and the trade tills. Our note on the big product photo explains both choices and when each one suits a counter.

How do the customer options work?

Each sale on this till starts only appears when the business sells both ways. Walk-in sells at shelf prices with nobody named on the sale. With a customer starts with the customer, so their prices, discount and credit apply from the first item. The change takes effect from the next sale; the one on screen keeps its side.

Choose the customer first appears when the business sells to customers. On, a customer sale opens with "Who is this order for?". Off, products come first and the till asks for the customer at Pay or On account, never letting an account sale through without one.

What else is in the menu?

  • Arrange items turns on dragging, so you can put the tiles in the order your staff reach for them. Done arranging saves that order for the whole business, so every till shows it.
  • Ask AI to find products opens an assistant: describe what the customer wants in plain words and the product grid narrows to the matches.
  • Refresh products reloads prices, photos and stock from the server, useful straight after changes in the back office.
  • Till sounds on this device controls the scan ding and the other till sounds. A quiet office can mute while the shop floor keeps them.

The cart has a … of its own (More sale options). Show line details adds the pack, price each and any discount under each line's name; it starts off, so the cart stays short. The same menu holds Clear this sale.

Which settings apply to the whole business?

Open Settings, choose Invoices and tax, and open VAT and the till:

  • Every price includes VAT: on, every price is read as already including VAT, whatever the product says. Off, each product decides, and VAT is added to prices entered without it.
  • Hide products with no stock on the till: on, out-of-stock products disappear from every till until restocked, while staying in your catalogue. Off, they still show, so a sale can take stock below zero.
  • How do you sell at the till?: Walk-in only, Customers only or Both. With Both, staff switch with one tap at the top of the cart, and each till picks its own starting side in its menu.
  • Choose the customer first: the business default that each till can change in its own menu.
  • Ask for a site / job reference on sales: account sales get an "Add site / job" box, and the reference prints on the invoice.
  • Create the invoice automatically when an order is placed or confirmed: on, every order gets its invoice straight away. Off, the invoice is made on dispatch or when you tap Create invoice. Businesses that only issue proformas do not see it.

Just below, Customers buying on account decides whether new customers can buy on account Straight away (no limit until set) or Only after a manager sets a credit limit.

Which add-ons change the till?

Each of these is switched on for your business, and the till grows a button or a screen when it is:

  • Quick Sale: a separate one-screen till for walk-in sales.
  • Rental: a RENT button on the main till starts a rental for the chosen customer or a walk-in, while the sale on screen stays where it is.
  • Tips: the food till offers Add a tip once there is something on the order.
  • Car colours: the paint till gets a Car colours tab, and scanning a colour code opens it.
  • Tablet or desktop till layout: the first visit asks you to choose Tablet or Desktop, with an option to remember it on the device. A small floating button shows the mode and switches it. Phones always use Tablet.
  • Keyboard shortcuts: for a till run from a keyboard, working together with the layout add-on.

Step by step: set up a new till

  1. Open the till on the new device and tap … (More till options).
  2. Under When you tap a product, choose Show photo for a counter customers look at, or Add to sale for speed.
  3. Switch Show stock on every tile on if staff need counts at a glance.
  4. On a computer or tablet, choose where the Cart sits and pick a picture size under Bigger pictures.
  5. If your business sells both ways, set Each sale on this till starts to suit this counter.
  6. Decide whether Choose the customer first suits this till.
  7. Leave Till sounds on this device on unless the till sits somewhere quiet.
  8. Use Arrange items to put best-sellers first, then press Done arranging.
  9. In Settings, open Invoices and tax and check every switch under VAT and the till.
  10. Make a test sale and park it, so you see the settings working before the first customer.

Which settings trip people up?

Every price includes VAT is the one to settle before you sell. Switching it later changes how existing prices are read, so a shop that typed prices including VAT, left the switch off and never marked its products as VAT-inclusive will see VAT added on top at the till. Decide once, check a test sale's receipt, then leave it alone.

Hide products with no stock on the till helps a shop that counts carefully and hurts one that does not. If stock figures are behind, products sitting on the shelf vanish from the till and staff cannot sell them. Get your counts right first, then switch it on.

Finally, remember that device options do not travel. Setting up the front counter's tablet does nothing for the till in the stockroom; walk round each device once with the steps above.

Settings that work together

These options shape the POS till on every device. Quick Sale shares the tap choice and keeps its own products-per-row setting. Till sounds and the camera button sit alongside barcode scanning. The automatic invoice switch decides when documents appear in invoices and payments, and the customer options matter most when you are editing orders for account customers.

Questions people ask

Are there keyboard shortcuts on the till?

Keyboard shortcuts are an add-on, and they also need the tablet or desktop layout add-on with the till set to Desktop. Then F4 parks the current sale, and the Hotkeys button or Ctrl and / opens the shortcut list.

Why does the Pay button say Quote?

Show prices is switched off on that device. With prices hidden, the button reads Quote when the cart is in the bottom bar and Generate Quote when the cart sits at the side. Switch Show prices back on in the … menu to sell again.

Why can't I find Layout or Bigger pictures on my phone?

They only appear on wider screens. A phone always shows product tiles and folds the cart into a bar at the bottom, so there is nothing to choose.

Why don't I see How do you sell at the till?

Restaurants and street-food businesses do not get it, or Choose the customer first, because their till serves tables and counters rather than account customers.

What happens to my till options if I clear the browser?

The device options are kept in the browser, so clearing its site data puts that till back to the starting choices. Business-wide settings are kept on the server and are not affected.
